HWDSB teaches approximately 50,000 students in its 103 neighbourhood schools. A new year brings a number of new faces to Gatestone. We hope to: add a digital scoreboard; install stage curtains; install and improve the lighting and sound system; and, add improved seating. Unfortunately, we were not able to take everyone but we appreciate the efforts of all who tried out. The assessment results are valuable for the school. a quiet location to work, scribing, and/or assistive technology. We even have the TipOff App where students can anonymously report bullying. Health & Safety (Asbestos, Fire Safety and Hazard Awareness); Respectful Environments Learning Modules (Respectful Working and Learning Environments Policy Directive and Accessibility); Medical Supports Learning Modules (AED Training and Anaphylaxis Training); and. What is not new at Gatestone is the tremendous commitment to students and student learning at Gatestone. Gatestone is ready for another fantastic year, a year with exciting new staff, facilities and programs. As well, our staff have helped students become familiar with the demands and format of the assessment by periodically posing “EQAO style” questions or providing EQAO-type assignments. We enter October without having to re-organize our school; however, because of low enrollment, one of our Full Day Kindergarten Classes will be staffed by Mrs. Benedict, without the collaboration of an Early Childhood Educator as in the other three classes.

Our extra-curriculars, both athletic and artistic, shone this year with a championship basketball team and with our first Arts Night. At the end of January, I will have completed four years as Principal. Our Special Olympians also did Gatestone proud with wonderful efforts and results by everyone. Another new feature this year is the ability for parents to subscribe to the Gatestone website using the Subscribe button on the right hand side of the website. Our Grade 2-5 students all put forth their best effort in all of their events…and pushed themselves to do their personal best. The Track and Field Team will be put together in the next few days and permission forms for those students attending the Area meet will be sent home later in the week. We believe that by building a caring and inclusive community through our Houses and by being a Tribes School, we are creating a school culture that does not tolerate bullying of any kind. Every year brings many changes in schools. These Staff members will be greatly missed by staff and students for their contributions. Thank-you to all of the students who tried out for our Junior Soccer Team. During the morning, Gatestone’s Staff will be analyzing examples of student learning to identify an area of greatest learning need in one of three skill areas crucial to success in today’s society: Once Staff has identified an area of need for each grade, they will begin to plan to improve student learning and provide the feedback needed to create a professional development plan to support that improvement plan.  HCI moved in to Central High School of Commerce (established 1897) in 1950 and closed with building reused as an Sanford Avenue elementary school from 1985 to 2011. Gatestone, led by Mrs. Radonicich and her Grade Five Class, raised more than $1800.00 in the Run4Change, an anti-poverty initiative, in May. With all of the hard work and preparation by both staff and students, we are confident that Gatestone will once again have a successful EQAO Assessment in 2013-2014. During Nutrition Breaks and before and after school, we have adults on supervision duty. Hard copies will also go home on Tuesday. Thanks too to Mrs. Mascia for your work this year as an Educational Assistant. 2013-2014 was a tremendous year at Gatestone in and out of the classroom. One of our goals for next year is to get our parents more involved in our School Council.
PATHWAYS: Who do you want to become? Across the Province, the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) assessment of Grades Three and Six Students begins on Monday, May 26th and concludes Friday, June 6th. Unfortunately, orders cannot be sent home with students so please make arrangements for pickup.
Our Winter Celebration is scheduled for Wednesday, December 17th from 11:30 to 1:00. Those students who made the team have brought home the Trip Information and Permission Forms. This year we have a special event to end the night: the Staff ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. June is always an exciting month in and out of the classroom.
