We're just trying to be proactive and get on the track to communicating well, but obviously my anxiety and compulsions have come up fairly often. I know so well how much joy and much needed respite from your symptoms it can bring. With powerful psychotherapeutic drugs like benzodiazepines, keeping a strict regime for re-dosing or prolonged use is essential. But if your psychiatrist believes medication would help you, I'd think very seriously about starting it!

that is good news. Xanax is likely the strongest of the commonly used benzodiazapines. From the 5 years I've been using them, I'd say that I haven't abused it not even in the slightest, shit, I don't even take them to get "high"..
Remember to use your Xanax as needed. Slower titration to the dose levels greater than 4 mg/day may be advisable to allow full expression of the pharmacodynamic effect of XANAX. So I suggest lying and saying you had a panic attack and that you need something for situations like this! You may want to try a dose a few weeks prior (in conjunction with an attack or anxiousness) and see how your body reacts. To me it sounds like a drug that covers up and hides the problem rather than gets rid of it, because the only effect I see it does is calm you down and mellow you out.

But it sounds like having something just for the days when the OCD gets really rough might be a good choice. or is it the sort of thing where once you crash it wont have the same effect? The key is not taking too big of a dose, I take just enough to function through the panic and rationalize my thoughts.

If social situations are your trigger I think knowing that you can just excuse yourself to the bathroom and take a pill would give you some confidence, and, in turn, help with the overall condition as you gain confidence. It's almost as strong as valium for anxiety the difference is it's not a benzo, it's not addictive and has no side-effects (aside from sleepyness if you abuse it). I noticed that when i take the xanax it feels like my brain is on fire hours later like i can think clearer and I have a million ideas and my childhood passions seem to come back. I think pursuit of therapeutic medication is one of the best things a sufferer can do. Ativan provides MORE relief (can't even tell youre panicking and you forget about it all (mushbrain in my case)) and xanax basically just shuts down the nerves (but you can still feel nervous, you just don't escalate). I use around .25 to .5 mg.I am also on cymbalta 60mg once a day. Today, I didn't have anything to do and took a low dose Xanax. I can tell you how each one makes me feel, but it will be different for each person, I assume: A- Felt like I was under water, asleep, or high X- Felt like I was still scared but in control of my fear and feelings, though unable to think too clearly C- Didn't feel scared (in mind or body) and less "cloudy thinking" than xanax. From one moment to the next, your whole outlook changes.

It's just when a trigger comes around, my whole body is flushed with anxiety it's hard to breath, literally. Take into account the adjustment period for your body to get used to the med's.
Personally, I have found Xanax to be a helpful tool- I haven't had any problems with it, and have been able to use it at a relatively low dose for years as needed (.25 MG pills I often split). In my particular case I am taking lexapro, but I have also been depressed and it has definitely helped with that.
